Just over a year ago, Samsung tried a different approach with the tablets. The high-end S-Series was announced, with the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 and the smaller Galaxy Tab S 8.0 the first two showpieces. Now announced the second generation Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7, which is also released in two sizes: 9.7 inch and 8.0 inch.
The Tab S 10.5 was trying to steal the hearts of consumers with an appearance very similar to that of the Galaxy S5. The tablet had the same front, the same striking color, a very bright and colorful pixel screen and he was very thin.
If we look at the largest Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7, we see a completely different device. If no Samsung had stood, we did not think it would have come from the same factory as its predecessor. For the i-word that Samsung does not hear you, but to use once: It seems that Samsung has gained a lot of inspiration from the iPad for this tablet. In terms of size, screen ratios, and even the new location of the home button Tab S2 is remarkably close crawled to the Apple tablet.
What has not changed compared to its predecessor, the high price of this tablet. That it is improbable that this indeed is the iPadkiller that the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 not ultimately become.
We've talked here about the design of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7. Most notable new feature is the screen ratio, which has repercussions on other components, such as the placement of the home button and front camera. No longer does Samsung use the 16: 9 ratio, but 4: 3. Indeed, like the Apple iPad.
It means that the home button also needed somewhere else, and under the short side of the screen, and no longer under the long side. Also, the camera is moved in that way, to the other short side.
We walk around the machine and start at the front. The edges of the S Tab 10.5 were not really thin. The edges of the Tab S2 does. Put this on top of an ancient tablet iPad 2, and you see it everywhere at least half a centimeter of surrounding is shaved. Also in the thickness anyway. Above the screen sits the Samsung logo, with the front camera next to it.
Below the screen so is the elliptical shaped home button, surrounded by the two traditional touch buttons for Android app management left and back right.
Surrounding the screen is a shiny metal edge. At the top is nothing, nothing to the left, right, begins to be a bit more exciting with the power button and the volume buttons which are contained in one long button. The bottom includes a USB port, two speakers and a hole for the earphones. The back shows a camera which is moved in the same manner as the home button. No longer in the middle of one of the "long" sides, but at the top center. The shiny Samsung logo is not the only thing that shines here. Also two compressible steel connectors for loose supplied cover can be seen here. And shine as well.
Last year we were pleased that Samsung had abandoned its own USB connectors, and that the Tab S series kicked off with regular micro USB connections. Now we are less happy, because now there is of course USB Type-C connector and did not look out of place on the new leader of the tablet series.
Super AMOLED has been in many smartphones, and the previous Tab S 10.5, proven firm. Colors pop off the screen, black is truly black on the other hand, in short: a beautiful screen. Tablet S2 9.7 again has such a screen. And again we are impressed. Who is trying to see how a single pixel, must bring a large magnifying glass. The screen gives this tablet a special appeal. It is pleasant to look at. You see this tablet working alongside other tablets in a store, then the difference will be obvious.
Yet it is strange to note that the screen of the Tab S2 is slightly lower than that of its predecessor, the Tab S 10.5. It does not matter much, and it can not be seen with the naked eye, yet. You would expect a newer tablet has a higher resolution, not lower. To be precise: the Tab S has a resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels, the Tab S2 has 2048 × 1536 pixels. It's the same resolution as the iPad Air 2, but Samsung had been expected better.
So why the lower resolution? Probably because of the different aspect ratio of 4: 3. This relationship indicates that the tablet is not like the previous one, is designed to make viewing movies, but for it to surf the web.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 is a very good tablet, but claims still disappoint parts. The cameras and the processor have undergone only a very small upgrade, and the quality of the battery is just gone backwards. The super-thin design and yet still crystal clear super amoledscherm much good. But in order here now 470 euros for counting down, probably many consumers go too far, especially considering that you can get all the cheapest iPad Air 2 for almost the same price, though not as broad, and not expandable storage memory than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7.
